The Body Orchestra
From the very beginning, development in the sheltering "home“ of the mother‘s womb is determined by an enormous "orchestra“ of "life sounds and movements“: Breath, pulse, sounds from the outside world, movements of the mother make a deep imprint on the unborn child, hearing and feeling these sensations with the whole body.
Appreciating the role of the body in opening to sound and movement in these early months of life, I regard it as a principle in my work to start each encounter with music and dance with the awareness of ones own body. Exercises inviting tactile-kinesthetic sensation can give the experience that spaces in and around the body are opening for movement and sound. Movement exploration that is emphasising the connectivity of different body areas makes the body aware of its aliveness. From the very beginning of sensing and exploring, a "delight“ in a dance of connected body parts might be felt like discovering movement as an individual voice. The body starts to play like an orchestra developing its sound, getting more and more orchestrated by opening up to new discoveries.
