Rhythm - Inner and Outer
"Music begins inside human beings ... The starting point is one‘s own stillness, listening to oneself, the ,being ready for music‘, listening to one‘s own heartbeat and breathing.“ (Carl Orff)
"Die Musik fängt im Menschen an ... . Das Erste ist die eigene Stille, das Insichhorchen, das Bereitsein für die Musik, das Hören auf den eigenen Herzschlag
und den Atem." (Carl Orff).
Moments of silence are an invitation to listen and feel inside. Inner rhythms emerging can be experienced already as the beginning of individual music and dance arising. Images might appear in connection with the breath: soft/light like a bird, strong like the wind, humourous like laughter ... The invitation allows the body to move and sense the wave of breath flowing through, eventually inspiring knees to breathe softly, finding the impulse for a jump in the outbreath of the pelvis. Breathing movement opens easily into sound: the sound of a breath, voice sounds, tones, melodies, songs. Or the instrument held in the hand of a moving arm starts to sound with its breathing gesture.
There is a whole world of outer rhythms that inspire endless possibilities to respond: The response of a dancing body part to the rhythm of a drum, a tactile sensated rhythm pattern made audible or visable with instrument or movement, the rhythmic structure of a haiku played out, the rhythm of a painting inspiring a sounding choir, a bouncing ball making the musician bounce while playing his timpanon ...
Inner and outer rhythms are in a constant interplay opening spaces of the inner and outer world.
